Brighthouse Networks featured Fast Sami. They reported: The Winternationals are now underway at
East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa. It involves a month's worth of dirt track racing.
Tampa Bay On Demand's On The Town reporter
Virginia Johnson hit the track with some locally sponsored sprint car teams to find out what it takes to drive. One of the drivers is only 18 years old. She's Samantha Taylor, and she started racing at age five when her dad raced dirt bikes.
Taylor told
Tampa Bay On Demand, "He bought me a car before I was born and then shoved me in when I was about three years old." That's why Taylor says she has a soft spot for the smaller race fans, like 4 year old future race car drive Jonah Hanneken, who stopped by. When asked what it's like being a female driver, Taylor replied, "You just race with the guys. Nobody knows the difference when you have a helmet on."
Jason Sides has 15 years of experience behind the wheel. "Everybody should try it at least once," said Sides. Virginia takes the car out for a spin. Virginia even got the chance to put the pedal to the medal. After a crash course and suiting up,
Virginia bravely stepped into a spring car. She noted that the idle is so high it moves without hitting the gas, and felt like driving a scary, out-of-control bath tub surrounded by a huge cage. The
Winternationals runs from now until February 23rd.
